Understanding Key Screening Metrics

Essential metrics and what they tell you about a stock.

Market Cap

Large-cap (>$10B): Stable, less volatile, lower growth potential
Mid-cap ($2-10B): Balance of growth and stability
Small-cap (<$2B): Higher growth potential, more volatile

Volume

Measures trading activity. High volume = liquidity and easier entry/exit. Look for volume surges (2-3x average) as confirmation of price moves. Low volume = wider spreads and harder to trade.

RSI (Relative Strength)

Above 70: Overbought, potential reversal
30-70: Neutral zone
Below 30: Oversold, potential bounce
Best used with trend confirmation.

Moving Averages

Price > 200-day MA: Long-term uptrend
Price > 50-day MA: Medium-term uptrend
50-day > 200-day: Golden cross (bullish)
Identify trend direction quickly.

P/E Ratio

Price-to-Earnings ratio shows valuation. Low P/E (<15): Potentially undervalued or slow growth. High P/E (>25): Growth expectations or overvalued. Compare to sector average.

Beta

Beta > 1: More volatile than market
Beta = 1: Moves with market
Beta < 1: Less volatile than market
Use to gauge risk level.

Tips for Effective Stock Screening

1.

Start broad, then narrow: Begin with basic filters like market cap and volume, then add technical indicators to refine your search.

2.

Don't over-filter: Using too many criteria can result in zero matches. Start with 3-5 key filters that align with your strategy.

3.

Combine technical & fundamental: Mix price action filters (RSI, moving averages) with fundamental metrics (P/E, market cap) for better quality results.

4.

Save your best screens: When you find a screening setup that works, save it as a preset for quick access during market hours.

5.

Screen regularly: Run your screens daily or weekly to catch new opportunities as market conditions change.

6.

Always verify: Screener results are a starting point. Always analyze charts and do additional research before trading.
